Not enough details to determine if you did anythig wrong. But first question I have is where is that "hello world" file at on disk? Your web site must be aiming there as its root directory. You want it to aim at the physical directory where DNN lives. That's one thing to consider. Another is what is the name of the website you created? is it the default website? Or does it have a name, so should you be going to http://myWebSiteName.localhost/ perhaps?

In IIS7, I created a new web site. Here are the steps I took...

  1. Backed up original database
  2. Backed up original physical directory
  3. Exported database from SQL Server 2000 (using back up)
  4. Restored database into SQL Server 2008
  5. Moved physical directory to new server
  6. Create new web site in IIS7
  7. Changed the "Connection Strings" to point to the restored database
  8. Changed the "Default Document" settings by moving "default.aspx" to the top of the list
  9. Loaded http://locahost/ and was redirected to old ddn site
I assume this has something to do with the "Alias" or what not. I am using DNN 5.1.1 and I looked under Admin -> Site Settings, but I didn't see anything about "Alias." I am fairly new to DNN, like this past week. I don't have a lot of experience with Windows servers either so this is going slower than I wanted it it.

you need to make sure having the proper alias in portal alias table. if installer pops up, there is most likely no contact to the database. Before upgrading DNN version, make sure to set database compatibility level to 100.

I will have to look into this a little bit more. I noticed that in "Application Settings" the SiteSqlServer string was wrong, I changed that to also point to my new SQL 2008 server. When I still go to http://localhost/ I get the installation wizard.

you will find portal alias in Admin :: Site Settings or Host :: Portals in a running DNN. Alias has to match the host header value assigned to your IIS web site (unless you are using default site or special port). In your web.config file, make sure that both uncommented connection strings are identical.

In my current DNN I do not have a portal alias option in Admin > Site Settings. I changed my connection strings to match and I am still getting redirected to the installation wizard. I do notice that there are 2 entries in the database  (dbo.PortalAlias). Should I delete these?

no, you don't need to delete portal aliases. Simply make sure, there is the correct one to reach the site in it.
