Brian,

All of the things that you mentioned with templates will be done I am sure.  The BIG issue is how can you support people on Express at the same time and in the easiest way?  I think it is silly not giving Express edition the ability to compile in the applcation since it is possible to download another free utitlity WDP (Web deployment projects)

Hi cnurse,

I come off from a development company which does allot of DNN development, in fact as a main architect for dnn in my company I don’t see that we could use WSP approach with building modules ever, simply because it does not provide enough flexibility either with builds, deployment, speed of development or many other aspects - well that's my 2 cents, that's why I've developed the described method which covers most ground as I see.

As for core team, yes I would say that this project could be made available through main dnn site, but what I would like to avoid is the smothering of big project vs. small one. If we are going through the *official* channel, I would like that we have freedom to develop this as we see fit, and implement our best practices as according to our knowledge and experience, without much politcs- if we can make an arrangement like this, I think that core team involvement would be very much appreciated and the *official* channel can do us both good.

Bert,

I'm using WDP because I want to have one central point for versioning, building, packaging, etc... I don't want it to be a part of the module project, because if you  look at the bigger picture in your solution you can have more than project so as I see it is very important to have one central point of control over all of these - and that's what I've acomplished with WDP.

As for hardcoded paths, yes you are correct that they on provide the "where-to-build" path, but if your module is in desktop modules, this can be achived in a non-hardcoded way with a little manipulation of relative paths - I will demonstrate this when I publish this addition next week.

The BIG issue is how can you support people on Express at the same time and in the easiest way?

You can't use WAP on Express.  I personally got VS2005 Standard (although free and I gave the link already.. so no current obstacle) when I found out WAP was not supported.

I think developers are going to get VS2005 one way or another if they are actually doing development.   Why the focus on Express because it is free?  VS2003 was not free.  This thread says WAP with DNN 4.x..  that implies not Express.

Vladan .. you are not modifying the core correct?  What is there right now that I can test out?

brian,

nope I'm not, one of the corner stones of the idea is not to even have the core dnn in the solution, let alone modify it.This of course does not mean that on occasion you modify the core, you do... but always try to keep it to the minimum.

As for testing, unfortunatly there is nothing to test at this moment, except the idea itself... but I suppose that you already did that by reading and implementing the ideas from that tutorial...
