For those in the UK wishing to be seen (at least) trying to comply with the new law these links may be very useful.

Links / explanations from the excellent OutLaw site - always good for advice and interpretation of UK "technical" law.
http://www.out-law.com/page-5486

They have set up a Cookie law site with specific info.

http://www.aboutcookies.org/Default.aspx?page=3
Also provides info on how to comply:
 http://www.aboutcookies.org/Def...

AFAICS: For full compliance browser vendors will need to add the mythical "do not track" feature.
It seems from the info on Outlaw that all we can really do is provide clear information on the risks as they apply to "mysite".
Interestingly even some large sites such as daily newspapers only provide info and links on how to change your browser cookie policy.

I took it to actually ask the ICO what I could do as I use DNN. Here is their answer.

Thank you for your email dated 30 March 2012 about cookies.

As you may be aware, the cookie rule requires that organisations setting cookies (or using similar technologies) to store or to access information stored on a user’s terminal equipment should obtain consent to do so, unless they are able to satisfy the ‘strictly necessary’ exception.

You have advised is that you run a personal website using DotNetNuke which uses cookies.

Firstly the Cookie Regulations do not differentiate between websites used for business and those for personal use. If the website uses cookies then the Cookie Regulations will apply.

You may wish to contact DotNetNuke to ask advice on any steps you should take and what steps they may be taking to comply with the Regulations.

It s highly unlikely that priority for any formal action will given to focusing on uses of cookies where there is a low level of intrusiveness and risk of harm to individuals, such as cookies that are not obtaining information about particular users activities. You may wish to provide as much information as possible to users on your website about the cookies being set and perhaps advice them how they may use their browser settings to prevent cookies.

Advice that we give on the cookie rules may be found on our website

More detailed guidance on the cookie rules may be found in our ‘Guidance on the rules on use of cookies and similar technologies’ which is available on:advice on the new cookies Regulations.

I hope that you found this helpful.
