The ModuleSettings and TabModuleSettings table define the SettingValue column as nvarchar(2000). Personally I believe (though I've not seen any performance data on this) that both Module Settigns and TabModule Settings should primarily be used to store relatively short strings. If a module has a large number of settings or some that may contain string values of more than a few hundred characters, I prefer to create a custom table for storing the strongly typed settings values for each instance of the module.
