Brand new to DNN. Trying to install it (for evaluation purposes) on a 2003 server, IIS6, SQL Server 2005 (Express). The latest version - I think it's 5.5 or 5.6.

My questions are:
- I've granted 'Full Control' permission to the directory containing the unzipped files of the runtime version (to which my virtual directory points). Is this necessary? Can I take the permissions back after it's installed?
- Same question for the SQL Server account with full (sysadm) powers that the installation is using. Is that necessary? Can DNN manage with fewer database powers?
- Could someone point me to documentation for the version I'm using? The place I looked on the DNN site had documentation for 3.x., but I may just have been looking in the wrong place.

Thanks,
Stephen

DNN is a dynamic system that requires continual access to the file system and database at the highest permission levels.

The NETWORK SERVICE or which ever user is the owner of the application pool requires FULL ACCESS to the dnn root folder and its children.
The sql user that access the DATABASE requires full owner permissions to access the database.

As for the documentation, check out the Resources links above.

Thank you both for your replies. I have two follow up questions:

Given the considerable priviledges granted, what are some reasons that DNN users feel safe using the product? Or what are some ways/methods used by DNN users to mitigate any risks about the same?

About the documentation link. When I follow the navigation 'Resources -> Books and Documentation -> Project and Documentation', I see many useful items there, but they seem to be for a much earlier version of the software.

When I go to the manuals under 'Resources -> Manuals' or 'Resouces -> Support', I see more up-to-date manuals, but I am asked to register before downloading them, even if I am logged in. Further more, the register form never seems to load (the browser hangs) even though the text leads me to expect a form.

The Blogs are helpful, but not the comprehensive instructions that I am looking for.

Perhaps someone could guide me more specifically to what I'm looking for?

Thanks,
Stephen

Hi Stephen, the 'Register' page is quite normal and is really a kind of profile update (notice that there is no user name), you don't actually get registered again. Just complete it and click Submit to get the manuals. Not sure why you browser should hang there but have you tried clearing your cache or used another browser?
