I'm trying to add a .ascx user control as a module. The module works fine on my development machine. When I attempted to manually copy the controls, code, and change the web.config file, the module appears to create just fine, no errors, but when I add it to the page, I get DotNetNuke.Services.Exceptions.ModuleLoadException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

I then tried to create the install package from my dev machine and install the zip on the production site, again, module installs properly, get the same error when adding to the page.

So I then attempted a simple ascx control with just Hello World text, I get the same error when trying to add my module to a page.

My dev machine is running IIS on Windows 7, my prod site is hosted by Network Solutions.

Any ideas on where to troubleshoot? The error message is quite vague and it looks like NetSol has limited the site logging.

Thanks,
David

When logged in as host user on the production site do you find additional related error details (in particular the stack trace) that are logged in the Admin-->Event Viewer when placing the module on a page? If so, please post the detailed error in this thread.

What version of DNN is installed?

You mentioned having to make a web.config change when manually moving the module to production . . . please explain as it may help to locate the cause of this issue.

Im assume that you are building a compiled module - in which case it sounds like you are not installing the compiled dll of the new module on your production server.

Did you inherit your .ascx control from the PortalModuleBase?

Why did you change web.config?

Looks like you have developed simple .ascx control and try to add it like DNN module.
