Not sure if this is the correct forum, but have to put it somewhere.

Our SQL server is not working so we're trying to get everything moved over to another server.  This server already has SQL 2008 on it.  I backed up the DNN database I had on the old server and restored it onto this new server.  Thought everything was okay.  In the DotNetNuke web.config file, I changed the 2 connection strings to the new sql server name.  When I try to view a site on a different computer, it says site is under construciton.  When I'm on my web server, it brings up the installation wizard and then it gives me this error:

The Auto option has been disabled as the DotNetNuke Application cannot connect to a valid SQL Server database. You can continue to use either of the other two Wizard options and configure the Database settings at the appropriate Wizard step.

I don't think I need to install anything as it's already on the web server and has been working fine. All I'm doing is changing SQL servers where the databases are.  Any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong?

Or do I get the newest version of DNN and just Upgrade/Install that one?  Will that fix my problem?

It sounds like your connection string is wrong. You should try connecting to your SQL Server using SQL Server Management Studio with the same credentials you are using in the web.config file, I doubt you will be able to.

You'll need to get the correct connection information going to proceed.

I'm just confused because I used the exact same user name and password.  I just changed the server name in my config file.

If I can't connect to sql server using my dnn user account, how do i make that work?

Rather than creating a new SQL server login on the new server using the same username and password I would suggest creating a new SQL Server login with a different username and then add this new login as a user for the restored database. Make sure that you grant the new user login db_owner role for the database.

I suspect that the problem may the what is referred to as "orphaned users" - although the original database login and the newly created SQL Server login have the same username they will not have the same internal security identifier. I find that several of the DNN hosts which will help you migrate a DNN site from a different host all advise to use a SQL server username different from the one previously used.

If you do not want to change the SQL username, this MSDN article will show you another way to fix this issue:

okay, i had no problem with changing the username.  When deleting the old user, i had to make sure that it was not owner of any other roles in the database.  Then i added a totally new user and added that as the owner to my DNN database.  now it works.  Thanks so much for the help and quick responses.  I REALLY appreciate it!
