Thank you Timo for all your efforts!

What solved it was the following piece of code:
<fortyfingers:STYLEHELPER ID="STYLEHELPER1" AddCssFile="../MyFirstSkin/SharedHeader.css" runat="server" />
in \MyFirstSkin\SharedHeader.ascx. (In my previous attempts I had the directory in 'AddCssFile' wrong.)

Gerard

(For clarity and completeness I include in this post my directory structure and a small summary:
/Portals/_default/Skins/MyFirstSkin/:
* SharedHeader.ascx
* SharedHeader.css
* HomePage1.ascx
/Portals/_default/Skins/MySecondSkin/:
* HomePage2.ascx.

'HomePage1.ascx' and 'HomePage2.ascx' both use 'SharedHeader.ascx'. The '40Fingers Style Helper Skin Object' automatically includes 'SharedHeader.css' in 'SharedHeader.ascx' when I use the code in this post above.)
