I'm building an application for DNN, and want to be able to give the customer the ability to add custom fields to tables in their database, for their own needs...

Here's my problem, is there a way to dynamically determine that a new field has been added to a table?  Is there a way to make the ..INFO.vb dynamic?  To change based on the structure of a table?  Not to mention the ..provider.vb and ..controller.vb being aware of a new field.

Bottom line, I would like my access to data to be more dynamic.  I am just curious if anyone has any ideas to use in a more dynamic nature.

Thanks, Greg

How are you wanting display this data? If you need a spreadsheet-type view, take a look at the User Defined Table. That does exactly what you described, but I'm thinking you want to use it for something else.

Actually, here is the scenario I am running into:

  1. I provide the user a function to create a "custom field" to a database table.
  2. Now the user has created the field, but the business objects are not aware of it.
  3. Is there a "dynamic" or programattic way to do it?

Also, on a side note.  Are there any drawbacks to accessing a database directly, instead of using the business layer other than locking yourself into a single data provider?  More specifically, are there drawbacks to DNN by accessing a database directly in a module?  The only reason I even ask is, I can do exactly what I am talking about above, accessing the database directly.

Thanks, Greg

Have a look at UserDefinedTable module, that provides this functionality (and upcoming UDT 3.3.0 has been refactored to ease the addition of DataTypes and reusage of code.

You can bypass the Data Provider, but you should use sprocs to prevent sql injection.
