I'm trying to upgrade a DNN installation from 04.09.05 to 05.04.04. It is my first upgrade so I may have done some rookie mistakes.

I had some initial problems with the upgrade, to make the upgrade process complete I had to move the Telerik.Web.UI.dll from the Istall directory to the Bin directory. After merging the release.config with the old web.config and setting r/w permissions for the Network Service the upgrade completed without errors.

The problem is that after the upgrade it is not possible to get the page to load. IE simply hangs and chrome says that the page http://xxx/Default.aspx?tabid=36&def=ErrorMessage has resulted in too many redirects.

I simply don't know what to do now. Any suggestions what may have gone wrong or how to proceed? I'm very grateful for any help I can get in this matter.

You don't seem to get too many suggestions about your problem. I don't know what caused your error, but let me give you some ideas.

First of all, the Telerik dll. This seems to be an issue many stumble over, and I myself never had it. But then, I followed a more step by step upgrade path, skipping some versions. You did the right thing.

Merging release.config with web.config is no longer necessary in 04.09.05 and upwards. The upgrade process now merges release.config.

Could it be that your manual merge exercise actually caused that error? I don't know, but this would be one thing I would try. Restore the backup (hope you have one) and just copy the contents of the upgrade over your dnn root end start the upgrade process.

One more thing that could have wrong: before decompressing the upgrade, rightclick the zip file and go to its properties and 'unblock' the zip file.

I've run into this one before. A google search for dnn upgrade redirect loop will turn up a number of things to check.

This one solve my problem after a particularly nasty upgrade
