what happened to all of the modules which used to be in 5.4? after installing dnn 5.6 i no longer have a store or site announcements module....many others have gone missing. is this an installation problem or a removal of functionality across versions?

my problem appears to be an installation / configuration problem which i do not know how to solve....the documentation for 5.6.2 shows the module but where is it?

If you are doing a CLEAN install - only the minimal core modules are installed by default - this is done for performance reasons.

If you go to HOST -> Modules - and select Install Available Modules from the Action Menu - u will see a list of all the available modules.
Only install the ones you need to ensure optimal performance.

the work around (kludge) is to download the modules and install them

You must be logged in a HOST.

Look at  Hosts -> Extensions  for 5.6.2  sorry.

Yes the actions menu is the dropdown menu on the module.
