if my DNN is installed under Default website as Application (IIS 7.5) and by adding alias to portal1 in format domain1.com/dotnetnuke/portal1 I can access it from external source how do I hide /dotnetnuke/portal1 from URL?

so user can just go to http://domain1.com and be redirected to portal1 based on domain name they type?

You would have to make sure that in IIS under bindings you added domain1.com
You add domain1.com in DotNetNuke Admin->Portal settings as an alias.
If the domain domain1.com is not registered yet, you may want to list the IP in %windir%/system32/drivers/etc/hosts.
Browse to http://domain1.com. DNN will figure it out.

well, I must be doing something wrong so here is what I have:

- windows 2008 R2 hosted on dedicated server

- dotnetnuke install under Default website and "Dotnetnuke" is an application

- created A record for domain1.com website that resolves to this W2k8 webserver

- in dotnetnuke alias of default portal is defined as localhost\dotnetnuke

- and portal 1 is defined as localhost\dotnetnuke\portal1 I also added domain1.com as alias

no matter how I change this settings this anytime I type in IE domain1.com it always opens welcome iisstart.hmt page and obviously this is not want I need

at this point my work around is to create redirect.html page and use it a start page for IIS instead of iisstart.htm so if someone type domain1.com it redirects to domain1.com/dotnetnuke/portal1

but first of all I do not want to expose /dotnetnuke/portal1 , secondly it take longer time to open home page because it first hits redirect.html before it actually hit portal1 home page and finally what if I want to have more portals and more website on the same server

what I need to do so typing domain1.com it opens correct portal
