Could someone point  me to a resource that will explain what I need to do to secure my log on and cart page. I am working on a 2008 rc server and have full access, I can create certificates etc but I just can't seem to get the whole process figured out. should i buy a certificate, should I make one, I can point it to the site but i don't really know how to configure the site properly to use it. I have looked over the documentation but it leaves me with too many questions to start the process.  I think its a simple thing but I just do not get it.

thanks

Try this (assumes your have an SSL Cert correctly installed on the server):

  1. Navigate to Admin>Site Settings
  2. Maximize the Advanced Settings section
  3. Maximize the SSL Settings
  4. At SSL Enabled?, check the check box if an SSL Certificate has been installed for this portal.
  5. At SSL Enforced?  check the check box if page which are not marked as Secure will not be accessible with SSL (HTTPS).
  6. Click the Update Link.
  7. Navigate to your Cart page and Select Page Settings
  8. Maximize the Advanced Settings section
  9. Under "Other Settings" At  Secure? check the check box.
  10. Click Update to Save changes.

How do I secure the Registration page?  I got the login page secure but my registration is still not secured.  In the past I created a dedicated registration page and put the registration module on it, however, which module does DNN5 use for registration?

Here is what I do. I create a Page (Secure Sign-up), that is has permissions for all users to view, but the page is hidden from menu navigation. Remember to check 'Secured" in the Advanced Setting' area.

  • On that page add a Users And Roles. This will add a few modules to the page. Simply delete all but the Sign-Up form (Add New User).
  • Go to your Admin>Site Settings page, under Advanced Settings>Page Management, change the User Registration page to the one you newly created.
  • Log out and give it a try...
PS: the same can be done for the Login page too, but I'll assume the stock method is working for you.
