I breifly used DNN 3.x with MSDE, and I came to understand MSDE instances, and where data is stored in them, and how to properly backup MSDE instances.  I want to be sure I'm getting good backups of my new DNN 4.x installation with MS SQL Server 2005 Express, but I'm unsure where my DotNetNuke portal data is now stored.  Can someone with more SQL Server 2005 experience than I help explain?

On a Windows Server 2003 machine where my new DNN 4.x is installed, I installed SQL Server Management Studio Express. I open SQL SMS Express, and connect to my [servername]\SQLEXPRESS server ok.  I'm hoping to see my DNN database in here somewhere, but I do not see it.

I printed Shaun Walker's "DotNetNuke Data Access" whitepaper, the one contained in the DNN 4.x docs ZIP.  I don't think this doc has been updated for SQL Server 2005 Express installations.  Even if the doc was updated for DNN 4.x, it's way over my head.  I would really appreciate any suggestions for getting a basic, fundamental understanding of how and where DNN 4.x stores data, when using SQL Server 2005 Express.

If a problem can be solved, there's no use worrying about it.
If it can't be solved, worrying will do no good.

the DNN database is located/created by default, in your DNN installed directory, under the App_Data directory.

As SQL Express is basically = MSDE, using the built in backup systems will work, as the DNN data for your portal information is stored in the Database.

Thanks, Johnny, for the pointer to the data.  Pretty obvious naming convention; I should have deduced that. I subsequently found that I could use SQL Server Management Studio Express to ATTACH to the DNN database, and back it up.  That's the main reason I was looking to get closer to the data; to insure I had a good backup of the DotNetNuke database.

SQL Server Management Studio Express (v9.0.x)

Databases > (right-click) Attach > Add :  (browse to [DNN Installation]\App_Data\Database.mdf) > OK > OK

The DotNetNuke database should then appear in the Databases folder/container.

Right-click the DotNetNuke database, then select > Tasks > Backup...

(at this point, my defaults were good-to-go, so I clicked OK and the backup took place perfectly; you might want to change the Detination path)
