Hi Guys & Gals,

Hope you can help... spent 3 days of frustration with a fresh install of the latest community edition install. The problem I have is, the "Wizard" went through from start to finish with no problems - I saw lots of "Complete" and "Successful" type words.

I clicked on the Launch Portal... and up it came! Yah!  Problem is, when I log in with SuperUser or Admin... screen flashes and it goes back to the main portal - but login was not successful. If I type in a user that doesnt exist... it recognizes that and comes back with user doesnt exist. I can enter a new user... it enters OK... I can see it when I run an SQL statement against the DB.. but I still cant log in??

Suggestions?  Please find below some extra info...

I installed Win 2008 Server and SQL2008 onto a new server. I downloaded patches... and ensured ASP 3.51 was installed.

I downloaded the latest community edition. In IIS I started a new Web Site "DNN".  I placed the expanded download files into the physical directory. In SQL I added a new Database "Dotnetnuke"... and made an SQL user that could log in using SQL authentication. I made that User the dbo of "Dotnetnuke".

I went through the process of adding a new virtual directory - with NETWORK SERVICE rights... tried changing all sorts of other user rights...mapping...etc..  I changed the Web Config file to mirror the info necessary.

I tried installing using Custom, Typical, as well as Auto. All the same issue.... installs... but no login ability. I have the tried the install probably 20 plus times... frustrating. I have also tried changing some of the WIn2008 server security settings... to no avail. Unless I missed one?  I also tried logging in from another machine connected to the server... same issue.

I tried using a Windows authentication login as an alternative... but it fails the first install screen -  Auto install is greyed out. It wont go past one of the install screens to a successful install.

Help would be appreciated!

Was really hoping to get some sort of response. I have tried for the last couple of days additional security and other settings... same issue.

I guess Im going to give up on this platform If I dont get some sort of input - even "idjut... you didnt try THIS..." would be good! I cant afford to waste any more days, so any input at all would be appreciated

Plagiarizing from a previous post:

The all important <machineKey> section of the new web.config file will be different. It is the values for the validationKey and decryptionKey attributes in that section that control encryption/decryption of user passwords. Without those values transferred from the old to new web.config file, no users will be able to successfully log into the site.

The machinekey values must follow the DATA not the DATABASE.  The question is where did your values come from?

What likely is confusing people, hence the lack of response, is your statement that even a newly created user cannot log in.  That just makes no sense and suggests your machinekey encryption and decryption key pair maybe don't match?  I'm not an expert but have run into these issues.

Don't blame DNN until you are sure it's not an asp.net or db issue.  Been there; done that; been wrong each time...

Note that in a web farm all servers have to have the same machinevalidationkey and machinedecryptionkey per the tutorial on DNN Web Farm Support.
