Hi,

We have a small production 5.6.1 dnn ce site on a shared host using a skin extension and the site performs up to expectations. We had our host create a .bak copy of the database and a zip file of the root directory. We then downloaded these to a local system that includes Visual Studio 2010 express, SQL 2008 R2 Express and IIS 7.5 express. This is the same environment that we used to develop the site before uploading it to the shared host.

Our goal is to try and upgrade the site to 5.6.3 ce and add more functionality. The first thing we did was to restore the database Using SQL Management Studio using the create new database option with another name for the database. We then created a new root directory and unzipped the root files to this directory. Next we started Visual Studio and using the open new website function. We then modified the connection string in the Web.Config file to link to the .\SQLExpress server and the database name. Finally we started the web site and got a message that its an older version (3.5 as opposed to 4.0) and did we want to upgrade. We said no and the site opened, but there were a few issues which I have to believe are settings that need to be changed.

The first problem had to do with the container for our purchased skins. The use rounded edges with a border all the way around. The horizonal parts of the borders were missing, i.e., all four corners adn the left and right borders were all present, but the title bar and lower border were not present. BTW, the title text is present, its like the graphics for those areas of the containers is not there.

The second problem was that some of thegraphics (photos - .giffiles) are not showing. If I did an edit content, I could get to the properties of the image and image source showed /Portals/0/image name.gif. The files are there, but it's obviously looking somewhere else. If go ahead and add and image it works and the image source shows /rootname/Portals/0/image name.gif.

The third problem, is that the links I have to other pages on the web site are tied to the production site urls and not my local site, ie., the link will reference actualproductiondomainname/page instead of the local host.

Other than that everything appears normal. BTW, the menus, the flash slide show and banners all worked correctly

Any help here would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Larry

Some of the shared hosting providers (like GoDaddy) do not allow you to install DNN at the root of the website. They install as a virtual directory off of the root. It sounds like that's what's going on with your installation. You have DNN sub-directoried on the hosting provider, and then you installed on your local machine in the root. This will break images, links, etc. You could just duplicate the directory structure that resides on the hosting provider on your local machine, and you should be good to go.

Patrick, thanks for taking the time to reply. Two of the three problems have been resolved. My hosting provider is 3Essentails and so I didn't have the virtual directories issue exactly in the form you mentioned, but close. The container issue resolved itself when I decided to start over and reloaded the zipped files and did a fresh restore of the database. When I did the first View in Browser in Visual Studio, it still came up with the message that the site was based on older framework (3.5)  and did I want to upgrade it to 4.0. This time I elected to upgrade and the problem with the containers went away. Not sure why since they were running in production on 3.5 at 3Essentials - go figure! The missing images issue was resolved by changing in Visual Studio the virtual directory setting on the properties page to "/" instead of the default "/rootdir/".  The issue with the links has not gone away. They still refer to /domainname/page as the link.

Cheers,
Larry
