I am a starter in DNN.....still I have not able to grasp the total concept of this.....I need to work on projects developed in DNN 3.x and also DNN 4.x. I have a few queries related to this.....I can see that 3.x and 4.x have a lot of changes in terms of configuring and preparation of the portal.

1) Is it possible to install both versions at the same time.....if so, then how will we select the version of DNN when we start a DNN project.? How can we identify each version  in the computer (find out if both versions are installed) ??

(For ex, Suppose I need to select "New Website" in VS 2005, " DotNetNuke Framework" appears in the template section, (and I think that is for DNN 4.x). Suppose I need to develop a website in DNN 3.x in VS 2005, how can we do that?)

2) I think we don't have much documentations available for DNN 4.x, (the documents available in dotnetnuke.com are the same as that of 3.x), just I found a module creation in adefwebserver site..... Is it possible to master 4.x at the moment. From where can I get the proper documentation for this..?   Do I need to study the "DNN 3.0 Module Developer's Guide" (how to build the project) before going into DNN 4.x ???

If so, I would like to proper documents for studying each version .......

3) Currently, I am supposed to work on a project half done on DNN 4.0.3. I was going through the Professional Dotnetnuke ASP.NET Portals (for DNN 3.0)(Shaun Walker & et.al, Wrox)....but I found that the module creation steps are different for the DNN 4.x. Is that my assumptions or findings wrong?

Since I need to start the project urgently, I am writing this mail trying to find out if there are any other sources available.............

Please help me answering my queries......would be most grateful if anyone can guide to get a startup...

Thanking you in advance,

regards

Praveen.

Suppose I need to develop a website in DNN 3.x in VS 2005, how can we do that

This is not possible unless you reconfigure VS2005 to compile to 1.1 code.   DNN 3.x runs on Asp.net 1.1 framework, DNN 4.x runs on Asp.net 2.0 framework.

You should really check out the starter kit for DNN 4.x as well as Shaun's blog posts about the starter kit.  The post is a bit old now, but for the most part it still applies.  You can find both on this site.

I don't think what you are wanting to do is going to be very enjoyable as you will have to have two code bases.  If you need your modules to work on both versions, you should be able to develop 3.x modules using VS2003 and they will install on 4.x just fine.  At least in my experience anyway.

Welcome at DotNetNuke's World - I hope, you will have much fun with the portal system!

  1. yes, you can have both versions on a server, but there are differences:
    • starter kit is only available for DNN
    • For DNN3 and 4 you can use install or source download. Extract files into a virtual directory or Web site root, setup permissions and site configuration, create your database, edit web.config and hit your site.
You will find a detailed description in the installation guide included in the documentation pack
  2. yes, you should read DNN 3 developement documentation and the Shaun Walkers blog/post about developing DNN4 modules.
  3. structure of module files changed from DNN3 to 4 due to different project model.
  4. There will be a new book covering DNN 4 developement from Core Team, but I have no release date.

Thanks kevindgoff and leupold.....it gives a nice picture...

Actually I was confused with the modules of 4.0.3...as I told you I need to work on a half done project (developed in 4.0.3, VS 2005, SQL 2005)....I was trying to find out how I can change some of the page layouts of that project. So I think I need to work on the View (.ascx) files....rt?

Ok...let me go through the module development guide 3.x & Shaun Walker's post, then I will get back to you with my doubts....

Thanks again

regards

Praveen

you can edit .ascx files without a need to compile. So settings although may be made from code behind you need to recompile.
