Hello,

I'm very new to DNN, but not Windows Server and IIS. I have been tasked with migrating our corporate presence website running DNN to a new server and have some questions that I could not otherwise find here or in the manuals. When the project is complete, I plan to contribute anything I find back to the upgrade wiki. First, our current configuration and where we want to get:

Windows 2003 R2 Enterprise 32-bit
IIS 6.0
DNN 5.1.1

Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise 64-bit
IIS 7.5
DNN 5.6.3
  • Where is the download for 5.6.3? I can only find the download for 6.0 and I would rather not go there until it is more mature.
  • Should I upgrade directly to 5.6.3 or upgrade one version at a time (or some path in between)?
  • I found the list of extensions used in our current version (5.1.1) but I am unable to tell whether these were part of the original install and will be upgraded automatically. How can I tell the difference between a native extension and a third-party one?
  • Is there a document somewhere on migrating to another server?
  • Is there any other advice you can think of that will help me?

Thank you kindly,

Daniel

Hello,
legacy downloads can be found at the codeplex site - http://dotnetnuke.codeplex.com/releas... is 5.6.3.

Whilst you can jump many versions in one go, sometimes there are issues caused by unexpected configurations/incorrect 3rd party modules, so we keep a list of suggested upgrade paths at http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Resources/W...  (there also good wiki pages on upgrading at http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Resources/W... )

DotNetNuke upgrades only upgrade the core, they do not upgrade core modules, except the embedded ones (e.g. html/telerik) and in rare cases one where a module contained a critical security issue (but I can't recall us doing that in a few years now). This allows sites to upgrade succesfully, back the site up and then upgrade any modules as they see fit (note: you'll notice upgrade warnings under host->extensions for a number of modules - this list will get richer as we capture more data from the extension catalog)

As to migrating to another server - if it's using the same domain name then theres nothing special to do - if it's using a different domain name/different IP you'll have to add portal aliases so that the site knows to respond to those urls.
