Hi, I have a website, eg, www.myweb.com and can create sub domains, eg, www.sub1.myweb.com and www.sub2.myweb.com.
I have read about creating portals in DNN6 and think parent portals are the correct for my needs. However, I do not know if I will have to do a new DNN6 installation on each portal.

Also, if I do have to create individual installations, I would like to know whether a standard licence of a skin where it says something like

"As a qualified Licensee who has purchased the “Standard License” you are allowed to use this Software Product on a single website (DotNetNuke portal), residing under a single domain, or multiple domains provided that each domain points to the same website, that belongs to either you or your client. You must purchase a License for the Software Product again if you wish to use it on another website (DotNetNuke portal).

Thanks in anticipation of your help.

DotNetNuke supports the concept of portal aliases (http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Resources/Wiki/Page/Portal-alias.aspx) where more than 1 domain name can resolve to a portal so you can point your subdomains to a single portal this way. However tpically subdomains are used to logically seperate site functions and as such you'll want seperate look&feel and functionality - as such you will create new portals. As a child portal takes the form currentdomainname/portalname, it's not valid, and in this case you will create new parent portals. When creating a parent portal you have to ensure that in IIS these domains are already added and so any requests will be routed to the dotnetnuke site itself. As to your licence question you'd be better to ask the vendor but my reading of that is that as long as your urls all point to the one dotnetnuke codebase you're fine.

Thank you for your help again Cathal. As usual you have given me a very comprehensive answer. I had already written to the Skin vendor but at that time I was still waiting for a reply. they have now replied, and yes the Standard license is fine for our needs.

OK...I was reading this, and think I might have missed something. Let me give you my scenario, and what I think I need to do, and then ask the question as to what I am missing.

I have a web design site: http://webdesignliberty.com. I want to use a subdomain to create a demo site for one of my clients: http://aftdemo.webdesignliberty.com.

I know I need to create the subdomain...and how to do that. Then, I believe I create a portal for that subdomain in the hosting controls on the main website. I know how to do that.

Do I need to install a DNN application on the subdomain, or will the installation on the main domain suffice?

BTW, my host provider does not permit application installations on the root folder, so the main domain has a folder to hold the database. Will that make a difference in the whole equation?

Thanks for the help.

Hello,
If you want multiple top-level domains to access the same dotnetnuke site then they must exist as host headers in IIS e.g.http://webdesignliberty.com and http://aftdemo.webdesignliberty.com . If you want those two domains to address different portals, then you need to add a new portal for the 2nd one -as you're using a different domain (and not just webdesignliberty.com/aftdemo) this means you need to create a parent portal and set's it's URL to aftdemo.dotnetnuke.com

Both sites access the same dotnetnuke folder structure so no new subdomain folders are needed (dotnetnuke actually creates a new folder in the portals folder to handle the redirection based on url)
