Hi all,

  I have been fighting with DNN for 2 days now trying to get this thing to install, but it always fails at the database stage. Please can someone help. Here is the setup:

OS: WIndows 7 Ultimate
DNN Version: 5.5.1 ( I know it's old but I need it installed)
SQL Server: SQL Server 2008 R2

I have setup a folder on my D: Called Websites, within this there will be various folders for each install of DNN. At the moment I have a folder called DNNTest. This folder has the following permissions set:
NETWORK SERVICE: Full Control
IIS IUSERS: Read/Write/List
Also the other default permissions

I have a fresh version of DNN unzipped to this folder and I have modified the web.config to show:

<connectionStrings>
    <!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2005/2008 Express
    <add name="SiteSqlServer" connectionString="Data Source=.\SQLExpress;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|Database.mdf;" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />  -->
    <!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2005/2008     -->
    <add name="SiteSqlServer" connectionString="Server=(local);Database=DNNTest;uid=Stephen;pwd=********;" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />
  </connectionStrings>
  <appSettings>
    <!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2005/2008 Express - kept for backwards compatability - legacy modules
    <add key="SiteSqlServer" value="Data Source=.\SQLExpress;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|Database.mdf;" />   -->
    <!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2005/2008 - kept for backwards compatability - legacy modules     -->
    <add key="SiteSqlServer" value="Server=(local);Database=DNNTest;uid=Stephen;pwd=********;"/>

I have setup a new application in IIS and pointed it to the folder where DotNetNuke is unzipped to.

I have setup the SQL side in this order:

Under: Security -> Logins: New User
Login Name: Stephen
SQL Server Authentication
Password: ********
Unticked Enforce Password Expiration/User Must change password.
Clicked on O.K

Under Database -> New Database
Database Name: DNNTest
Owner: Stephen (Selected using the browse button
Clicked O.K

I have also made sure that the SQL sever is set to: SQL Server and Windows Authentication Mode

Now when I run the install it gets as far as the database setup section. I select SQL Server 2005/2008 Database and enter the database entries:

Server: .\SQLExpress
Database: DNNTest
Untick Integrated Security
Username: Stephen
Password: ********
Leave everything else as default

When I click O.K I get the following error:
Connection Error(s):
Index #: 0
Source: .Net SqlClient Data Provider
Class: 14
Number: 18456
Message: Sql login failed

I know this is fault with the connection to the database but I just can't see what's wrong?

Thanks for reading and please help.

I would suggest that the Server: .\SQLExpress value should be revised to explicitly point to the name of your server.

Server: MYSERVER\SQLEXPRESS  - this should be the same connection value that you use when you run SQL Server Management Studio.

Thanks for the info Wes. I have just tried this and I still get the same error. Does it make any differance that when I log in to the SQL server I am using the Windows Authentication mode. I log in with my Windows username and no password?

U need to log into sql manager the same way - using sql authentication - its that that is causing you issues..

Thanks for the info. I have re-installed SQL and set up a user account during the install and now DNN installs work fine
