i am trying to get into development using DNN 6. I found the Task Manager videos and I think they are exactly what I need but I was wondering if they were also available in a text format? Personally I learn better when I can read, skim, and re-read through something i am trying to learn. Can anyone tell me if this does exist or where a similar type of tutorial in a text format does exist? Mainly I am just looking for how to work with DNN 6 in regards to ASP .Net development which I already have a handle on. Thanks!

Hi Phil,

If you start in dev with DNN, you should buy "Professional DotNetNuke Module Programming" or one of the other available books. Currently, there is no DNN 6 book but those related to DNN 5 can be used.
In short, a DNN module is nothing more than a standard UserControl inheriting from PortalModuleBase. If you have a good knowledge of ASP.NET dev, you should be able to create DNN module.
Concerning the Task Manager, may be you talk about the Scheduler? If yes, you can found several articles herehere or here. If your need is different, please provide the link about the video you talk about, I will guide you.

It would be so particularly appreciated that your messages begin with "Hello" and end with "Thank you" or any other form of politeness. Ask yourself what your reaction would be, if you were approached by me (a total stranger) on the street to ask you something without saying "Hello" nor "Thank you"? After several years of services dedicated to the community, I begin to be tired to read requests without any form of politeness.

Ah thanks, my dev knowledge with ASP .Net is pretty decent so I am not too worried about that, mainly just trying to get a feel for what the difference is between the view, edit, and settings ASCX files that were created in a my module template in Visual Studio 2010.

The video I was talking about was http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Resources/Video-Library/Viewer/VideoId/260/Part-1-Task-Manager-Series-Introduction.aspx

Thank you for the other links, ill take a gander at them!

Philip,

I just wrapped up the first iteration of the Task Manager videos, though I need to get them organized and easily found/watchable. Right now they are a little all over the place in terms of finding them

In the mean time, what I would suggest is grabbing the source code for the module, you can get it from http://dnntaskmanager.codeplex.com as I just released v00.00.01 in both INSTALL and SOURCE options.

That being said, I will work to create tutorials out of each of the videos as well, but that is going to take some time due to the amount of content and other projects going on.

One thing you could look into is our DotNetNuke Training Subscription, specifically our Module Development course included in that comes with a PDF manual and full source for a "ToDo" module. The subscription gets you access to the recordings, materials, and even live training sessions (next live Module Dev is in october).

Thanks Chris, I think I get the picture of whats going on looking at the ASP .Net code in the zip file on CodePlex which is just what I needed. Also I looked at the Training Subscription, but $999 a year is a little out of my price range at the moment =) I do have one question, could you sum up what the difference is between the purpose of the view, edit, and settings ASCX files? Thanks!

Phil
