Hi,

I've been assigned to migrate several DNN sites which are currently running on a 32 bits W2K3 server and a SQL 2K5 DB server to a W2K8 and SQL 2K8  64 bits server. The DNN versions vary from 4.x to 5.x and many different modules from snowcovered are used.

Can I just move a site to the new server and restore a DB backup from the old server? And can I expect problems with the different installed modules?

Thx!

I haven't seen any issues moving from a 32 bit to a 64 bit environment, so I would think you should be okay.

When migrating sites, be sure  to configure the Connection strings properly in the web.config if you change sql servers, usernames, passwords, etc.

Also be sure to configure the file system permissions properly as well, depending on which version of Windows you are using (and version of IIS) the permissions may vary from server to server.

That's a great relieve!
But what about installed modules which are bought on snowcovered? So native 32 bits dll's can't get in my way?

Yes they will - but you can control that in IIS instance by changing the application pool 'use 32 bit' from false to true.
The next gotcha will be that you may have to change the application pool to run from integrated to classic.

... and that my friend, should see you through most of the problems. :-)

I never had a need to run DNN in 32 bit mode.

I think if you need that the server is not configurated correct.
