Followed the instructions per WIKI article - as I always do.

The upgrade completes OK.

And I can login, host/password.

But when I try any of the admin (Host) functions, Extensions, Host Settings etc - I get this error.  (The host site is working, and I can navigate to my test page on it, and even edit content).

DotNetNuke Error

An error has occurred.DotNetNuke.Services.Exceptions.PageLoadException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. ---> System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. at DotNetNuke.UI.Skins.Controls.LeftMenu.CheckShowPath(Int32 tabId, RadPanelItem panelItemToCheck, String pageName) at DotNetNuke.UI.Skins.Controls.LeftMenu.BuildPanelbar(RadPanelItemCollection rootCollection) at DotNetNuke.UI.Skins.Controls.LeftMenu.OnLoad(EventArgs e) at System.Web.UI.Control.LoadRecursive() at System.Web.UI.Control.LoadRecursive() at System.Web.UI.Control.LoadRecursive() at System.Web.UI.Control.LoadRecursive() at System.Web.UI.Control.LoadRecursive() at System.Web.UI.Control.LoadRecursive() at System.Web.UI.Page.ProcessRequestMain(Boolean includeStagesBeforeAsyncPoint, Boolean includeStagesAfterAsyncPoint) --- End of inner exception stack trace ---
with a "Return to site" link below that, which works fine.

Any suggestions?

Thank you,  Duncan.

it seems to be a known issue and a workaround is to replace the files (the leftmenu.ascx and leftmenu.ascx.cs with the 5.6.3 versions - http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Resources/Forums/forumid/108/threadid/424770/scope/posts/threadpage/3.aspx

Thanks Cathal, nice homework! :)

You're obviouisly a bit of an expert around here and I respect your opinion - can I trouble you please to one more question on this.

Do you think my best bet is (rather than replace those files), to go through a 5.63 upgrade, and then to 6.01?

My concern is there may be other bugs not yet uncovered.

Though I have to say, it's gonna be a right PITA - the upgrade process is relatively straightforward - but it's all the testing I then have to do on the sites I run - checking installed third party modules etc etc.  It takes ages!  But... if you think that's a better way to go, then that's the way it's gotta be.  (Others welcome to pitch in too BTW! :)

Cheers,  Duncan.

No the bug was introduced in 6.0.1 (and i believe will be resolved in 6.0.2), so either upgrade to 5.6.3 or else if you upgrade to 6.0.0/6.0.1 you can copy the files over (dont forget to delete the leftmenu.ascx.cs) to workaround this bug whilst we resolve it. Upgrading to 5.6.3 and then onto 6.0.1 will not resolve this issue (as the 5.6.3 files are in vb.net whereas the 6.0.1 are in c3)

Thank you mate that sounds great - the big move to C# huh? - cool!  Really glad about *that*.

For now, I will upgrade to 5.63 and leave it at that until the 6.02 is out.

Cheers,  Duncan.
PS if DNN is moving to C#, then I think I'm gonna have to plan on introducing the source and working that in a compiling environment - for starters, debugging the problem I had would be lots easier I'm sure. Got a nu machine coming up too, so timely! :)
