Hi there

I was trying to follow the instructions for upgrading a DNN (5.6) site, here:

http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Resources/Wiki/Page/Upgrading-DotNetNuke.aspx

But didn't get too far. After duplicating my file system, database, and IIS site, I get this error on the new site:

[NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.]
DotNetNuke.Entities.Portals.PortalSettings..ctor(Int32 tabID, PortalAliasInfo objPortalAliasInfo)
in C:\Builds\Maintenance\WorkingDirectory\Library\Entities\Portal\PortalSettings.vb:152
DotNetNuke.HttpModules.UrlRewriteModule.OnBeginRequest(Object s, EventArgs e)
in C:\Builds\Maintenance\WorkingDirectory\Library\HttpModules\UrlRewrite\UrlRewriteModule.vb:483
System.Web.SyncEventExecutionStep.System.Web.HttpApplication.IExecutionStep.Execute()
+68 System.Web.HttpApplication.ExecuteStep(IExecutionStep step, Boolean& completedSynchronously) +75

I can't work out why, and I know that the upgrade will fail unless I sort it (I've already tried!). I have full permissions to
NETWORK SERVICE on the new file system. Does the Portal database record contain some sort of hard coding of the
site location in the file system, that is missing from the upgrade instructions? I can' t think what else could have changed.

Thanks very much if you can advise.

Regards

I reckon I've got it. When i duplicated the IIS site, it is necessary to give the new site a new host header, different to the original site. I did this, but also, this host header is entered as a value in a field in the PortalAlias table. This of course is duplicated over to the new database when this is created. Therefore, I had to manually edit the host header, in the relevant Portal Alias record, to match then new host header of the new site, as described here:

http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Resources/Blogs/EntryId/1482/DotNetNuke-Tip-Modifying-your-Portal-Aliases.aspx

Hope this might help somebody else with the same problem.

Cheers
