Just out of curosity after I've looked at skins for sale on snowcovered and realized while I might not know much about dnn skin development, my design/html/css/javascript skills are pretty good and if i get the "know-how" under the belt I can create skins that really rock:

Does one actually make money selling skins on snowcovered (others?)

I've been looking for something productive to get myself busy with after getting over the dnn dev learning curve and probably would have been doing what I always do:  Create stuff for fun.
Figured why not try do something that's fun anyhow, but also make a few $$ from (tired to settle for an HP while I want Alienware for instance.  :-)  )

Just curious of course.

I doubt you'll get many snowcovered vendors confirming that they're making money as they're unlikely to want to encourage more competition but I can tell you that snowcovered sees a lot of transactions and it continues to grow - its also being redeveloped to make it easier for users to find extensions (and from 6.0 we've integrated it into the host extensions page). As for the amount it's hard to say, I'd encourage you to create something with the hope that it might make you a little "fun-money" rather than make you rich (but fingers crossed it's the latter).

Well I don't know too many people that can live on it but you can use it to make extra money. I have a few skins there but the sales are peanuts. However I keep them up there because it gets me other freelance jobs that are actually worth my time.

I happen to know several people that have made a very good living selling modules and skins. I know of one business that did nothing but sell modules for about 5 years, employed a couple full time people and ended up being acquired by DNN Corp.

Selling extensions for DotNetNuke is really a great opportunity, but just like any other business...what you get out depends on what you put in. The modules and skins that are consistently in the top 10 list aren't there by accident. If you look at Snowcovered as something to make a few extra bucks on the side then that is all it will be. If you look at is a business opportunity and run it like a business...you can make some really good money. Making $500-$1000 per month is pretty easy. Making $15,000 and more per month is very possible too, but it will take some more work.

Competition is good. Constantly pushing the envelope is even better. The worst thing you can do is post something for sale and wait for the money to roll in. Think three to four releases ahead and build something great. Don't get discourage if don't make a sale a right away. Keep your focus, be responsive, be creative and I think you will be pleasantly surprised.
