I have been hosting a DNN site on Network Solutions for a while now.  Network Solutions originally installed DNN for me (as is their policy), and I have upgraded the site once since then.

I now want to use some newer modules that require a newer release of DNN, 5.5 specifically.  I went through the upgrade process, and 5.5 would not install.  After  a little investigation, I determined it was because Network Solutions was still using .Net Framework 2.0 on my server.

So, I put in a support ticket asking them to give me access to .Net 3.5sp1 or newer.  I understand both 2.0 and newer versions can co-exist on the same server, so I assumed they had it available, and just needed to go into IIS and point my site to the newer version of .NET Framework.

Boy was I wrong.  After a week of going round and round with technical support at Network Solutions, they finally told me today they were not going to upgrade (or add) .Net Framework 3.5sp1 or above to that server.  They did say they added some "components" of 3.5sp1 to the 2.0 installation of .Net Framework, and that should be good enough.

Well, my experience with trying to install the newer version of DNN is that it looks to see what version of .NET Framework is installed, and if it says 2.0, DNN will not install.

So, my question is this.  What am I missing here?  Am I doing something wrong?  Did I ask the question in the wrong way?  Has anyone any experience with Network Solutions installing a newer version of DNN?

I am to the point of finding another hosting site, but I want to make sure I am correct before making the move..  Can anyone help?

no, you're doing nothing wrong here, and as you say the different versions can run in side-by-side mode so im not sure why they're not willing to deploy it for you. Its also been out since nov 2008 - so installing 3 year old software in a hosting environment is not an unreasonable request IMHO -i would consider evaluating other hosting providers as DotNetNuke 5.2.0 and above require .net 3.5sp1.

I did get a more formal reply from Network Solutions.

Network Solutions is being acquired by web.com.  The acquisition is in process, and may take a long while to sort itself out.  In the mean time, the technology (and about everything in the company) is frozen.

My speculation is that the hosting business will end up being web.com's, and network solutions hosting business will go away.

This doesn't explain why they have not upgraded to .net framework 3.5 since 2007, but does shed some light on the current situation.

I will move away from network solutions hosting service for my dnn site.

I would suggest looking at www.appliedi.net, I moved all of my hosting to AppliedI a couple of months ago and have been extremely pleased with the services.

I am hosting on Network Solutions using DNN 5.6.2 and .NET 3.5SP1. This website, http://www.b[poe2188.org, has been hosted for over 2 years with no problems.  Recently, I requested authorization to upgrade to DNN 6.xx which was approved.

You have to call their technical support organization to get the real information.  The email responses are chosen from "canned" replies.
