FWIW, I know that one of the DNN Team (Sebastian, I think) sometimes recommends a slightly shorter route depending from where you're starting. I really don't think 4.9 to 6 is a goer though.

Yes, I don't doubt it.  Insiders will know which scripts are executed, let's say for altering the database tables and populating new fields from version to version.  I looked around the Install package and you can see some references to cleaning up files from versions all the way back to 3.00.08.  This by itself is not conclusive, but if one could get to the SQL scripts that are executed one could get a better idea.  Well, rather than spending hours trying to reverse engineer the upgrade process we might as well look for articles or just run the 5 upgrades. But, it's the principle of the thing...running all the upgrades is like re-installing Windows and admitting you couldn't remove the virus the PC had. :-)

Now, I haven't checked who specifically wrote this article, what their credentials are or if they have the blessing of the DNN team...but 3rd paragraph:
"Before formally starting the process let us make this very clear that it is possible for the user to directly upgrade DotNetNuke 4.9.5 to DotNetNuke 6.0. Most of the tutorials published over the internet would suggest that it is either not possible or requires to install number of enhancement packages to directly upgrade DotNetNuke 6, which is fortunately not the case. Many would suggest to go step-by-step from DotNetNuke 4.9.5 to 5.5 and then to DotNetNuke 6.0. Here we will show with the help of screenshots that if you have IIS configured properly and have all matching specifications then there is no issue in upgrading DotNetNuke 4.9.5 to DotNetNuke 6.0 using the platform of Windows 7."  http://www.datasprings.com/resources/articles-information/dotnetnuke-articles/upgrading-dotnetnuke-4.9-to-dotnetnuke-6.0

You see, I'm at 4.09.00...so it grabbed my attention.  So, close!  The writer points to problems with OS, permissions, SQL configuration and external factors to DNN as the possible causes of failure.

Now, don't you think it would be a good idea for each upgrade package to have specifications as to how far back a version it can upgrade?  I believe many, many people will have the same questions.

I'll look around a bit and get to this in the next couple of days.

Thanks.

Hmmm ... well DataSprings are a respected company and, subject to having control over your server environment, etc, maybe it could work. It would be interesting to hear if it does.

you may try a direct upgrade, however, if it fails you will need to restore original files and database and perform a multistep upgrade (I suggest 4.9.5, 5.2.3, 5.4.4, 5.6.3 and 6.0.2).

Thanks, Pingle and Sebastian.

After carefully studying the situation for 7 months....  No, just kidding!  This was on the eternal "nice to do" list.

After hearing the hype about 6.2, I listened to the speech by Shawn Walker and he said "you should be able to do it in one single upgrade".  I then thought, "let's try this!".

I was able to upgrade 4.9 to 6.2 in one step with one minor error, about which I posted on the "Upgrading" forum.  I just wanted to let you know about my experience since you offered your help before.  IT's a good thing if we're past that multiple step upgrade process.

The following is what I posted on the Upgrading Forum, just so you know.

Thanks,
Iván Torres

I have upgraded a local installation of DNN I have for testing.  I copied it from an XP machine to a Win 7 Pro running IIS 7.5 and SQLExpress 2008.

I upgraded from 4.9.00 to 6.2.00 and all scripts and updates ran without error, except for error "Installing Package File MailForm_01.00.00_Install".  I presume this would be the Form Mailer Module and as a test I added that module successfully to a page and the options and setting pages seem to work Ok.

Since it's MailForm 1.00.00 it seems there is no update from what I had before, which I presume is 1.00.00 too. Is there something else I should check or worry about?

I tried this upgrade in one step after hearing this Shawn Walker fellow in a Keynote speech say you should be able to do it in one single upgrade. :-)   The site I have is just HTML modules with a couple of custom ASP form modules.  On first attempt I had an error during compiling and it mentioned LINQ, so I presumed it was due to Framework version.  The 4.9.0 site ran on v2.0 so I set IIS to v4.0 (I don't have 3.5 on the machine) and fixed some folder permissions that broke on copying from a different machine.  I then ran the upgrade successfully
Am I wrong to think that if if a site runs in Framework 3.5 it will run on v4?

if you want to upgrade .Net framework for your site, you have either to run the migration script inside /install/config (AFAIR) or switch while upgrading DNN before running the upgrade wizard.
