The blog modules each have the Cache Settings section to change the Output Cache Provider.  However, when I try to change the setting to "None" it always reverts back to "file" (which is the Module Cache Provider setting at the Host level).  The modules have a warning stating:

"This module has indicated a recommendation to disable caching (select NONE from the Output Cache Provider list above). Enabling caching on this module is not recommended and may cause the module to display stale data."

We have had problems with the Blog Module, specifically the Categories Module caused the site to crash.  Could the Cache setting cause problems if there are many changes to the blog?

Also, are there recommended cache settings throughout the site when the blog module is used?  Are there settings we should change?

These are our site's current cache settings:

At the host level we have the cache settings as the following:

Page State Persistance: page
Module Cache Provider: file
Cache Setting: Moderate
Authenticated Cacheability: ServerandNoCache
Compression Setting: No Compression
Use Whitespace Filter: (no check)

On the Blog's page level:

Cache Provider: None Selected

On the Blog Module Setup: Default Cache Time: -1

Within the Blog's Individual Modules:

Output Cache Provider: File
Cache Duration (seconds) 0

Any information would be appreciated.

I also have this issue, anyone have a resolution to set the default cache provider to "none specified" so that the inherited properties of the blog default to "none" instead of file?

Yes - so is this a known bug?  Should I take the extreme action of settign cache to none for the whole portal so that it inherits down to the specific module.
