Great response Nina, and I have to agree.

Contrary to misconceptions, shared hosting in and of itself is not a bad thing at all.

"ALL net web applications are very demanding. Keep that in mind. "

Sorry, this is simply not true.

Well guys, you agree or not, the fact still is that Shared Hosting is what the name implies. No matter if you have a dedicated pool or not, if something bad happens you are down.

I have been in the reseller business from 1998. I have tried most hosting companies in UK and USA. And this is my opinion.

Also saying that "Sorry, this is not true" doesn't really mean anything you know. I can host a Classic ASP application in 50k pool and works FAST. I can't do that with DNN, Mojo Portal or Umbraco. Can i ?

or maybe i'm not that talented ....

lol

Your statement was about .NET in general (that part is untrue).

But what you're really stating is an issue with certain frameworks built on the .NET framework. THAT is an architectural issue with the portal framework and not .NET itself.

All i can tell you is that SHARED HOSTING is SHARED HOSTING. For DNN or not, it is a bad idea.

Considering the above, if your need is for shared hosting you must look for companies that know DNN and for companies that provide a unique pool for each DNN installation.

ALL net web applications are very demanding. Keep that in mind.

good luck

Costas

Firstly Ed thank you for that feedback - but I have to agree with Costas comment here which didn't mention  -

companies that provide a unique pool for each DNN installation.

That to me is pretty close to the mark.  And again, many hosters will avoid this where possible -firstly due to the control panels not always having that finite configuration option, through to the fact that just running a separate application pool without it even running uses about 70? mb of memory, I think - don't hold me to ransom on this, but if you can imagine someone running a machine with individual application pools, they might lose a % of revenue for hosting by not being able to max out the machine.

I really think that it's not just DNN specific. We've invested in this mother of a machine and - with ability to have 192gb of ram, and even with our fully optimised, highly cache lightspeed server.. do you think we can get this stupid Magento site moved over without errors. 200mb mysql db and 5gb of data has been arduous to say the least to get working as expected.

I think the common consensus here is to find a hosting company that has staff on hand that know DNN. That is the secret.  And evaluate your time over the cost of paying a little more for better service.

Anyway that's my two cents worth from Australia.

Hope this sheds some more light on things.

Beth-

I'm no expert by any means but I can answer as to what I would do if I were in your situation.

First, If you are paying $5.00 per month for each site then that's like $750.00 per month for all of them.  To give you an idea, PowerDNN  will usually put between 100 and 120 (or so) sites on their shared hosting servers (as do almost all other hosters). And PowerDNN generally has very fast sites as far as shared hosting goes.  They can do this because A) they know what they're doing, B) They use higher end machines, and most importantly C) Most shared sites are really low traffic sites so most of the time they just sit there doing nothing and use little or no server resources.

So, if a large number of your sites have light traffic (I'm guessing that some of them are probably VERY lightly used) then you could get one dedicated server for all of your sites and save yourself some fairly serious cash.  There are parts of running a server that need a large amount of knowledge and experience so you would want to choose a hoster who knows DNN - I would suggest PowerDNN, DNN4Less, or 3esstentials.  BUT, there are other parts of having your own dedicated server that aren't that hard to learn and I think you'll find that you'll really like having some of these abilities (abilities you don't get with shared hosting).

Just my 2 cents and in the end it is best to consult the experts (one of the three above) and see what they suggest based on the traffic your sites generate.
