Olivier,

Did you have this issue prior to the DNN6 upgrade? It seems to be more of an issue now than with DNN5. Also, my client likes the file manager that DNN uses and because of this - changing this to a 3rd party managed  solution isn't possible. Not to mention we do not give FTP access to the site to our clients. So they need the internal file manager function.

They knew it worked before... so this is like telling them. "Hey here are all the benefits of DNN6, but now there are file manager issues..." it comes off sounding like we are supporting them on an unstable platform.

The reason I am asking for others to come forward and present their findings is because I have noticed this issue on every single one of the DNN6 sites I have launched... this is not an isolated issue.

Anyone else?

Hi, this issue I'm talking about is in DNN 4.9.4.

I always thought that the reason for it is that the editor (and also the filemanager) first tries to read all files in the system before starting (on load).  If in asp.net you have to read a directory which is stuffed with files [ .NET: Directory.getfiles()  ] will just take longer.  (I noticed this during our archiving project)

Advantage: the actual processing of the module is faster,

Disadvantage: it takes a while to read a large folder

Still, if you have this amount of files, it is not really manageable with the filemanager?

My suggestion:

1)      You write your own filemanager for these files (I can write that for you ;-))

2)      Start an archiving project (I guess not all your 1600 files are active?) (and yes I can write that too)

Let me think about this... 1600 files does not seem like such an amount that should cause such a slow down with the stock file manager. Do you think?

Would this file manager be a part of the DNN admin area? This is what will concern my client?  I will email you about this

if the 1600 files are in the same folder->yes

If you would have subfolders:

/portals/0/myfiles/2011/12/file20111221_1.pdf.resources
/portals/0/myfiles/2011/12/file20111221_2.pdf.resources
...

I'm guessing the total time for reading everything would be smaller: you will need more calls to get the files per subfolder, but that action would be faster

hi. I also have the same issue. I have about 38 gb of data in the file manager, and it could take 10 minutes to load. Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks,
Jeff
