I wanted to edit the html content, the one on the right side with link starting with GET MANUALS, which is shown on the website home page when DNN is installed and the preview had only the text, no formatting and no images. Why is that? Does the editor have no access to the css stuff for that content?

There can be a couple reasons why. First you should make sure that the editor is using an editor.css file in the portal root. Check out this post: http://mndnn.com/Blog/tabid/63/ID/16/DNN-6-Telerik-Editor-Background-Color-and-CSS.aspx

Copy your styles that you want to appear in the editor to that css file. {body, heading tags, paragraphs, ul, ol, li etc..., css classes...} . Go into the editor config (host > HTML Editor Manager) and make sure it is loading editor.css in the CSS File setting

Also, when you are editing content, you may be loading an edit skin and/or container, which could have different styles. If  you have styles defined in a container.css file, those won't be reflected in edit mode. The editor doesn't know what pane or what container the module is in.

Thanks for the info.

However this seems too technical for a user who is using a CMS who should be shielded from this knowledge and who should be using the editor to do basic editing.

So is this DNN's shortcoming for not being able to know the container's CSS?

I have to spend quite amount of time now trying to figure all this out. The HTML manager indicates it's using editor.css but there's not editor.css file anywhere. This would be confusing for a user if they are expected to create and fill one.

please note, there is a known issue where modules that load in a popup are not loading the correct css files -this is probably what you're seeing - i believe this is slated to be fixed in 6.1.3, but in the meantime you can disable popups (either globally or on individual modules) to workaround this - http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Resources/Wiki/Page/Modal-Popups.aspx

I disabled the popups and now the images display in the editor. However the text doesn't have any formatting.

The text gets their formatting from the skin.css file in the webpage outside of the editor.

How do I know what css files the editor is loading?
