q) i am wondering if you found out anything about using the free Ajax extensions in DNN yet?

From my research, I think that it is not supported in DNN anymore.

if you mean the ajaxtoolkit it works fine (though there was an issue with the version for .net4 clashing with a recent telerik update - i believe that was fixed or is due to be fixed in the next release). One thing to note is that the ajaxtoolkit expects xhtml and many controls wont work in non-xhtml skins. However, DotNetNuke ships with the telerik asp.net ajax extensions which are often better options than MS Ajaxtoolkit - http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Resources/Wiki/loc/allpages/Cat/Telerik.aspx

Ajaxcontroltoolkit is not compatible with DNN anymore because of Toolkitmanager. Telereik maybe is better but price - is over $1000.
