Hi ,

When a user registers, if they accidentally put a space before or after their username... or if they put a space within their username such as "john smith" as a username, it causes them issues later on.

Is there a way to automatically remove spaces from new username registrations?  Or to give an error on registration?

Thanks

You can prevent them by going to User Accounts, User Settings and specifying a regular expresson to validate usernames.

Forgive my ignorance... but any suggestions on what to enter in the box?  e.g. what is the regular expression to enter?

We use the following expressions on most of our client sites:

^[a-zA-Z0-9]{5,15}$

It prevents the use of only a-z and A-Z and 0-9 -  no spaces or any other punctuation symbols oh and also makes sure the user name is at least 5 characters long and no more than 15 character.

Hi,

Is it correct that user names with spaces *should* be causing problems though and, if so, what kind of problems?

It's just that I have sites (recently upgraded to DNN 6.1.2) with spaces in usernames and never had any problems (so far).

And if I add Westa's expression, will it cause problems with existing user names?

TIA.
