When doing an update, I am receiving the generic "an error has occurred" message once I attempt to open my site, and have no way to know where to start searching for the problem.

I have heard that there is a way to set up my web.config file to allow messages to be visible so that I can diagnose the problem. Is this the case, or is there some other approach that I should be using?

Thanks!

You need to turn off custom errors:

PS - make sure you don't leave this in this state as it exposes information about your website in some cases.

Thanks for the tip, and swift reply... unfortunately, when I checked I already had this line in my web.config file... and the actual error message still does not show.

Patrick,
I believe that to even be able to view the details, you need to be browsing to the site from the actual serer the site is on. If you don't manager your own web server (physical or virtual), I don't think you'll ever be able to access the message.
So, in a shared hosting environment, you probably won't be able to see the full error.

Thanks Mike... that means I'm still stuck, but I appreciate your input.
