After typing user/pass for the host user in the logon dialog I get directed back to the frontpage - where logon control still says Login ...
And no menus etc. are visible .... Im logging on locally in a browser on the web server.
Its possible to register new users - they are added - but same behavior for them ..

I've checked the dnn eventlog via the SQL server Management Studio, and the login is registered in the eventlog ....
Installation went fine with no errors ...

Any hint appreciated.

please check that you are not running a cookie-blocker (e.g. norton internet security), and also please try to test with a 2nd browser.

Hi, thank you for your replay.
I've already tested from 2x computers and with 2x browsers. (IE8,IE9 and Firefox) - same behavior.
No errors logget in the eventlog table in DNN .....
No errors during installation ...
Arrrgh .... ;)

The solution:

Change
<authentication mode="Windows">
to
<authentication mode="Forms">
in web.config

 Oh happy day ;)
