I am running DNN 6 on Windows server 2003 / SQL Express / 2 gigs of ram. I keep getting get the error message: Site is currently Unavailable. This seems to happen randomly. I can't figure out what is causing this. Also the site loads very slowly. Is this because there is not enough RAM on the machine? I have run other CMS packages on this same machine with no issues.

DNN sites can run on a machine with 2gb of ram. As to whether it is sufficient in your case depends on a lot of things like traffic, size of site, DNN settings etc.

Are there a lot of messages in the event log about the restarting of the application? Look at your app pool recycle settings in IIS. You might need to make some adjustments here after working it why the pool recycles.

Also check the event log on the server to see if there are any events logged regarding the SQL server. The public site unavailable message can be caused by SQL communication issues.

If the site has been operating for a long time or has a lot of events recorded in the DNN event log you might want to look at emptying the event log or better exporting the contents so you can still refer to the events whilst troubleshooting. To export you will need direct access to the SQL server and use SQL management studio.

The above should get you started if figuring out what is occurring.

Thanks for the suggestions. The site is fairly small with low traffic.

This error is happening on a daily basis. I went in to the web.config and updated the connection string. The line below was commented out. The site loads after doing this.

<add name="SiteSqlServer" connectionString="Data Source=.\SQLExpress;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />

What should i change is the IIS app pool recycle settings?

I'm having the exact same problem. I'll be working in the app just fine then "bam" I get the "site not available". Very frustrating. Site is hosted in another data center. they changed the timeout value in the app pool but it still happens. I think our app runs slow too.

We developed most of the app on a standalone server and never had this issue.  We're not sure what to do next.
