I have a very strange problem - recently, in the last week, many of my mails are not getting through to users.

I am getting errors like this (this is a valid hotmail address as it is mine!). PowerDNN recently changed all my email passwords (due to a vulnerability), but the only place where a SMTP mail password is stored is under the Host SMTP settings and I have changed this to match the new password for this user (you can see my settings here:  http://screencast.com/t/l8pt1xejAuMw )

I'm getting users complaining of never receiving emails - and I am out of ideas - any suggestions please?

since your host just changed email passwords due to a vulnerability, perhaps they also now require SSL for SMTP? You might try checking that checkbox in the screenshot for "SMTP enable SSL" to see if that fixes the issue.

I have some more info:  It looks like it is only sending email if they are a user on my host server

I made a new user with my email address ("rod at pokerdiy.com"  which is the same as the user specified in my SMTP settings).
The New User email comes from "support at pokerdiy.com"  (which is an ALIAS of my server email user) and arrives correctly.
I then do a Verify Email and it also arrives (from the support at pokerdiy.com) not "rod at pokerdiy.com"

Now I use my hotmail address - rodjoyce at hotmail.com - I don't receive the new user email, but it doesn't log an error either: I then go to Verify and now it logs the error below (and no email received).

It looks like it is only sending email if they are a user on my host server?

Looks like the error is being generated from/through Active Modules

You have an answer on your Active Forums post:

http://www.activemodules.com/activeso...

Which is pretty much what I was going to say in my next response.

Hi,
I had exactly the same problem.
Just, out of the blue, no mail were send to customers.
Only mails to my own email address were send.
I had this error twice.

The hosting help desk helped me out with this.
It seems to be an error on the server.
Below their answer.

Regards, Ton Hermes

It was because 'relay settings when using SMTP authentication' enabled.
Need to disable this option on email admin configurations. I also have notified our sys-admin about this. Thank you
