I'm a teacher and I've started to use DNN as part of my web design and development course. I have one main domain and then I create a child portal for each of my students.

What I would like to know is if I can automate the process of setting up these child portals? I have about 200 portals to create with each one being identical - a empty portal based on the default skin. I can provide the username of the student, which will act as the name of the child portal and also be the administrator username for that portal. Everyone can have the same password as well.

Ideally I'd like to have all of this info in a file and have DNN read through the file (or perhaps db table) and create the portals.

Any suggestion?

I am not aware of an existing solution, but it shouldn't be too difficult to create a multicreate option, depending on the source of it - use imported users from a specific role in your parent portal as admins and one of their attributes (name, profile attribute) as portal name as well as a selected template for all.

Thanks for your reply.

At present none of my students exist as users in the parent portal, so I would have to get all of them set up. Could you expand a bit more on what you mean by a multicreate option?

I expect you plan to create a list of websites based on a list of students, who should act as admins, each for their own site. I would prefer to import them as users of the master portal and associated a common role - this would make it easy to send a newsletter to the role. Now you need a custom routine (module), which creates a site for each of the role members, using some of the user and profile properties.
