If i create a parent portal within one of my sites and host it along with the main sites and other portal site i have on the site, can i at a later stage, host that parent portal site on it's own with a seperate hosting company.

What i am asking is - say i create websites for various clients all under one dnn installation and hosting package through different parent portal sites, then at a later stage the client wants to move away from me, am i able to seperate their site from mine so that they can host their site elsewhere - independent from the original site it was created through?

Theoretically yes. To do so you just have to take a backup copy of the files and database for the install and load this up on a new server and delete the portals/ sites from the 'new' configuration that you don't want to move.
Doing this can leave remnants of the other sites information in the database e.g user details. How much of an issue this is depends on the type of site and your clients attitude towards this data leakage.
The other thing to consider is the impact on licensing of any 3rd party modules ( and DNN if you are using the pro version), you wil probably have to purchase new ones.

Hi Anthiny,

Thank you for your response.

So i make a copy of the files, then just delete the other portals from the files before uploading the files to the new server? Is that correct?

What about the database files?

you need to create a copy of the database as well and use the clone for the cloned IIS web site.

Thanks Sabastian.

Does this mean that all sites, even if they, at a later stage, are hosted independently will all still have the same database?

Does this pose any privacy issues between different sites (different clients) - in other words, could they access other clients information from the database if they knew how?
