Hi,

Has anyone managed to successfully create an offline copy of a DNN site ??.

I have a need to demonstrate a site say from a CD on a PC with no Internet to connect to a live site.

Most site grabbers fail at the login stage, some alow you to log in but then cache the non logged in pages (.

Any ideas/pointers please ??.

Thanks

Graham

Well I've not heard of one complete cd based demo yet since it's sql based and needs to talk to something that's installed.. but I suppose a good powerpoint, flash demo would also do the trick. With a link to an online one with a password provided to the client on delivery of the cd.

Just trying to think out of the box a bit.

Two solutions: it's pretty easy to install DNN on XP Pro. You can use MSDE for the database and IIS comes with XP Pro, so just run the site on your laptop.

The other alternative is something that gives you a partial solution if you have a simple site without any of the more sophisticated dynamic features. I have written a couple of sites in DNN for users who won't switch from their hosting provider who doesn't have ASP.net, so I wrote a small VB.net program that saves all the pages as html, changing the links as necessary- http://www.cityost.nu is one of those.

Hi,

Thanks for the responses. I was hoping that one of the many website grabbers would do the trick but they all seem to fail at one point.

I know that the real site will be dynamic - thats why its dnn-based .

Worst case my user could start up a grabber, then log in and grab a whole set of screens - which could then be demonstrated as if online.

The specific client is non-technical (in this area) and wants the demo to be as representative as possible - so a flash etc. demo probably won't cut it.

I am probably going to end up installing the whole thing on his laptop (SQL Express + dnn + IIS) (. The biggest issue I have with this as a solution however is that the client will see this as a deployment option and want to sell it on to his cliens this way - as a desktop app - when it really needs to be a server-based system .

The issue is as much one of 'perception' as anything else. Of course I can make it all work locally but I don't really want the client to see the system that way. Might have to propose a half-way solution and install a server on his exhibition stand .

As a pure CD demo - Flash etc. is probably the way to go - but the CD isn't really necessary - as we already have a 'demo site' .

Anyway I'm rambling - MANY thanks to Nina and Isomies ).

Regards

Graham
