I am trying to install DNN 6.1.5 on a Windows 7 / IIS 7 / SQL Server 2008 development machine. I follow all the normal steps to install DNN:

  • Extract DNN files
  • Set file permissions for app pool identity
  • Create IIS Application
  • Create SQL database
  • Create / map login for app pool identity
  • Run site / installer
  • Pass permissions and DB connection steps
  • Choose Typical installation

The installer starts, and fails with the following message:

Installing Database - Version 06.00.00...FAILURE ERROR: See C:\source\SciensusWeb\Providers\DataProviders\SqlDataProvider\06.00.00.log.resources for more information

The file named in this message does not exist.

I have tried this with the following AppPools, and in each case:

  • DefaultAppPool (ASP.NET v2.0 Integrated)
  • ASP.NET v4.0 Classic
  • ASP.NET v4.0 Integrated

All produce the same error.

Can anyone tell me what the problem is and how to solve it, please?

Although I've seen it posted numerours times as a solution or part of the install process, I've never changed the apppool or the associated permissions with it. I leave it to the default apppool and I never have problems.

What version of DNN are you using? Community?

I'd start fresh and attempt a new install. Also, see if you can get an installation of DNN using MS web platform installer.

Yes, community edition. I suspect the DefaultAppPool configuration is different to the standard IIS7 one, because I have numerous ASP.NET 2.0 applications installed on this machine. Is the default config for DefaultAppPool ASP.NET v4.0 Integrated?

Even with a WPI install, it fails in the same way. Interestingly WPI configures a separate AppPool for it, as a Asp.net v2.0 Integrated pool. I thought DNN 6 had upgraded to ASP.NET 4.0.

Hello Dotcom;

DNN supports ASP.Net v4.0. since 5.3.0 or 5.4.0 releases.

The issue you are running into is not normal.

Can I get you to post the error(s) from your C:\source\Sciensus\Portals\_default\Logs\.log.resources file

Generally having SQL db installation die like this is specific to the connection string and/or SQL permissions.

If you have multiple web sites already on the DefaultAppPool I would recommend you create a custom AppPool. I suspect if you investigate AppPool errors you will find that it is stopping because of some failure code.
