We have a multiple server configuration and recently ran into an issue creating a new portal.

When the portal was added, it only updated the physical files on one server.  We do not have replication set up for the entire web root, so I had to manually copy the portals/1 folder over.

Is that the only folder I need to copy over?

What is a best practice for creating a new portal on a web farm (without replication)?

I am thinking...

  1. Take all servers but 1 out of the loop
  2. Create portal
  3. Manually copy all files to the other web servers
  4. Put other servers back into the loop

Thanks for your time

typically people either point all the servers to a centralise location such as a SAN (therefore there is only one copy of the files), or else replcate via Windows DFS or a tool such as robocopy. AFAIR the new portal folder is the only mandatory folder, though if the site was a child portal a new folder of the same name will be created in the root and is required also (if its a parent portal this is not the case)
