I recently had a need for a good DNN Media Gallery module and spent a fair amount of time evaluating the prospects.  I thought I'd share what I learned.

First, the features I was looking for:

  • Image Resizing
  • Auto Thumbnail generation
  • Watermarking
  • Ability To Add Tags to a Media
  • Ability to Filter (or at least sort) on Tags
  • Unlimited Albums
  • Some Nice jquery presentations - preferably built-in but at least the ability for me to add them
  • Mobile Support (not a must have but would be very nice)
  • Amazon S3 Integration (not a must have)
  • Ability to upload large files and multiple files at once (not a must have)
  • Ability to read GEO data and display on Google Maps (not a must have)

Here are the Modules I evaluated:

Where I ended up:

I would have picked Ultra Media Gallery but for all it's nice presentations and gee whiz features it failed on one of the most basic - the ability to filter/sort on tags. Also, at $110 it is the most expensive.

So I ended up with Multi Media Gallery Pro from ZLDNN.com.  It can do everything I listed above with the exception of the mobile support.  Although I have to manually build the display presentations using my choice of jquery plugin but this isn't all bad and could be a benefit in some situations. It's template based display's and good set of tokens should be fairly quick to use - just grab the jquery code, paste it in, and add the tokens. Plus at $49.95 for a standard version it is a good value.

Some notes on the others:

  • Cross Photo Gallery - 1) Clean up your Snowcovered profile - very hard to read. 2) Silverlight is an enterprise technology. I would never use it in a public facing portal 3) 13 sub modules really adds a lot of garbage to the drop down in my control panel could you find a way to combine them? 4) Decent features as best as I can tell - could be a contender in the future.
  • Simple Gallery - I would have liked to have used this module and further supported Ventrian as Scott has been a long time DNN community member and offers excellent support. But it is a fairly dated module and has no jquery support. Needs to be re-written with repeater based templates.
  • Gallery Server Pro - has the best watermarking as you can set opacity. Missing a few of the above but not a bad choice.
  • EasyDNNgallery - Can you please, PLEASE stop "updating" your modules on a daily basis? And could DNN Corp please find a way to prevent developers from "updating" their modules just so they will be at the top of the module list?  Could you also please clean up your old versions? There must be 45 old versions of this module "garbaging" up the search results - I think they do this so that it shows on every page of the search results.  BizModules is now doing the same thing - just to keep up I think. This one is missing tag filtering and watermarking and a couple of others if i remember. Does have some nice jquery presentations.
  • XModPro / Xmod  - Had I needed some custom fields or the ability to integrate with other modules I would have went this way. They have several gallery / presentation module "kits" already built for you.

I don’t know why you are accusing us of something that is not true. Throughout this year (142 days until now) we released a total of 8 new versions of EasyDNNgallery module. It has never been less than 7 days between the two versions. We constantly develop all our products, and we will continue that way. Our customers appreciate frequent updates, and in many cases, they want the new versions as soon as possible because of new features or enhancements. EasyDNNsolutions.com is a company dedicated to developing our modules and we work on our products every day. In fact, we could publish the products on a daily basis.

@EasyDNNSolutions:

First, I will apologize. My post made it sound like you were the only one abusing the system and that is certainly not the case. There are several developers doing the same things.

Second, I just went to Snowcovered and counted - there are 41 versions of EasyDNNGallery in the system. Forty (40) of which are just since Feb. 9th, 2012 and are totally useless as nobody is going to buy an older version. This also doesn't include each of your other modules which are also building in numbers.

Third, you are correct - people like you to update your modules and add new features. I do too. This doesn't mean that you add a totally new Product Listing to the system every time you add one new feature to your product. You have one product listing for your module and update it when you add something new.  Also, if you are going to update your modules so frequently you could hold off and update your module listing say once a week or so.  This will prevent your potential customers from having to click through page after page of outdated EasyDNNxxxxxx modules just to see if there are any other modules available on the system.

I will repeat once again to be clear. We released this year 8 (eight) new versions of EasyDNNgallery. All other versions have been published in previous years, but now they have the wrong publish date on the new store - 2/9. Do you think that we have released 40 versions on 2/9 or the store was lunched that day?

We didn’t delete these old versions because we send the upgrades to users based on the version number and date of purchase. Even with these old versions on the store, some users complain to us that they don't receive upgrades and then we need to find an alternative way. We also are not happy with these old versions in the search results and on the system.
