Hello,

Got a message from my client that the site was down. It was and when I looked at the directory structure, I found that there was only an index.html in the root of the site. The rest of the directory structure appears to be there and the database is still there.

Turns out the provider - webhost4life - only keeps backups for 30 days and none of their backups have any files in the root (This site doesn't get much traffic so nobody noticed).

So, is there any way I can recover? If I put back the files that go into the root from the standard install, what do I have to modify besides the connection string in web.config? Isn't there some kind of key that has to match up with something (in the database?) to have things work?

Any help would be appreciated,

Tom

thats terrible luck, sorry to hear.

As to what you can do, the problem is that you will have lost some content (i.e. files uploaded that lived in the portals folders) which you cant recover. With regards to the database it is possible to recover/reuse some of it as tabs will work but modules are a problem. I'd suggest you install a fresh copy of DotNetNuke (that matches the same version as your old one), install whatever modules/skins you had before, and then use that -change its 2 connectionstrings in the web.config to point to your existing database. That will hopefully allow the site to load and run.

As to logging in -if you've lost the files you've lost the encryption key so can't log in. Please see http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Resources/W... for a number of ways around this - I'd suggest you recover your host user and then use that to manually reset any relevant users via admin->user accounts

Thanks for the reply,

I *think* the only thing I'm missing are the files in the root. The rest of the structure - including the portals directory - appears to be intact. Although they won't admit it, I think they moved me to a new server and didn't copy the files in the root directory. When I first opened the ticket, they told me I needed to have my domain pointing to a subdirectory which leads me to believe that they didn't bother to copy the files in root.

I'm going to try and just upload the files in root and change the connection string. I'll check that article about getting around the encryption key - thanks.

Have I mentioned that I hate Webhost4life?

Tom

Note: this is purely anecdotal as Im only reporting what others on the forums have complained about, but there have been a number of instances where webhost4life moved users to different servers without any notice - in some cases these servers did not have the ability to route to their database server (and in one case they were moved to a different database server) which resulted in downtime. SInce webhost4life were acquired it seems the new owner is making infrastrcuture changes to save money and not doing a particularly good job at it.

I've seen those same stories as well. I've never been happy with them and have moved most of my sites to PowerDNN. I still have two sites with WH4L because the clients wanted the cheapest solution. This is the last straw though so I'll be moving these two somewhere else soon.

On a good note, I got the site up. Turns out there *were* files missing from the subdirectories. I basically pulled all the files down from the site that was still running and uploaded them back to this site - except for the portals directory- and changed the connection string. When I hit the site in the browser, it thought about it for a very long time and I was thinking it wasn't going to work but then the site came up. I think my neighbors heard the yell of "Hot Damn!".

I now have to fix the login per the info you linked to but I'm hoping that will be uneventful...

Thanks again for your help,

Tom
