We currenty run our DNN 5.2 Website under an IP Provider.

I would ike to be able to export a copy of the website and Import it to my PC so that I can rework a lot of the pages, and then when I have updated whatever pages need to be redone, copy the content of any changed pages back to  our Hosted DNN website.

I tried creating a directory on my PC with the correct permissions, and then just FTP-ing the entire site down to my PC but that doesn't work when I try to start it up.

Is there any way to do this that will work?

Thanks,

Bryan.

bryan, to transfer the web site:

  • first add the new address as website alias in site settings.
  • now transfer all files and the database.
  • if you are not using file based database access (having "database.mdf" in your uncommented connection strings inweb.config file) you need to attach the database to your local sql server, grant permission to the account you plant to use and adjust both connection strings accordingly.
  • Make sure, IIS website is setup properly and your desired domain address is pointing to it (locally usually by modifying system32/drivers/etc/hosts file, using a text editor).
  • Grant edit and delete file system permissions for the website folder to the windows user, associated with your IIS app pool identity.
  • browse to your web site.

Hi Sebastian,

I must be doing something wrong...I am trying to export a copy of the website from my web hosting company to my local PC, directory D:\websites\WEBSITENAME

I added the Alias, localhost/WEBSITENAME to the website settings.

I FTP'd the entire file structure over to my PC.

I was not sure about the "database.mdf" which you mentioned.

I checked the host file, it had a couple of entries;
127.0.0.1 localhost:

::1 localhost

The directory had the correct security setting, NETWORK SERVICE

I tried to start up the website, using http://localhost/WEBSITENAME

It seems like it was trying to run an install, as the URL switched to; http://localhost/WEBSITENAME/Install/...

Then it got a timeout error.

Trying to send it to http://localhost/WEBSITENAME/Default.... it got a different error;

Server Error in '/WEBSITENAME' Application.

Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

Any ideas where I go from here?

Thanks,

Bryan.

It's probably trying to run the install because something is missing and it thinks it's a fresh install.

I've never had a lot of luck with copying a DNN install to a new server. Normally I just do a fresh install and start a new website. Is that an option?

Hmmm, I am trying to get the website onto my PC so I can work on some major changes, and also try various new skins, etc., so having the current web pages, files, data etc. would be good.
