I highly recommend using this (free) module for password recovery. Users can retrieve passwords with either a username or an email address. Furthermore, this module never sends the password in a plain text email (like the core module does), rather is provides a timed tokened link for a user to change the password to something new.

In both cases, these are open source projects and work well.
