I have spent over an hour browsing skins in the store looking for a skin which has containers using the full width of my 1688 pixel width screen but no luck.

Even some of the full width ones have containers which are not positioned at the far left. There's lots of space between the left edge of the screen and the first container from the left. I was wondering if this is a limitation of DNN's skin layout and whether this can be fixed manually in the skin.

I am using DNN 6.2.

There are no real limitation in DNN to what kind of layouts you can create.
BTW, the Pane the container is in normally  limits the width of the container, not the container itself.

I guess they are using a margin or padding in the skin to create some distance to the sides of the browser window (which should be easy to remove)

I checked one skin which said full width and it's using 960 Grid css framework. So I guess it's the full width of the 960.

Right, you could try this legacy skin, it has a full width version too (just to prove it's possible ;-)
