I can ONLY add a hyperlink in an HTML module if it goes to a page off the site.

I can even put in full URl, but if it is a page to the current site it truncates the address and will be cut off and go to a bad page.

for example if the link is to http://www.mytest.com/site/AboutUs.aspx 

then when it is saved you get

you get   http://aboutus.aspx/ instead of the fulll url

most likely, there is an issue in URL rewriting, did you modify the rules?

No, I did not modify anything.  This is a new install and I just used it as is.

I do not think I made any changes that woudl hurt it, where would I modify the rules???

this sounds strange, url rewrite rules should be displayed in Host Settings.
