I too need to upgrade a 4.x version to a newer version.  IE8 and some newer browsers do not work with 4.03 anymore.  They seem to work ok with the broken link button but it's time to get the server back up to snuff.   I'll go through the wiki process but just asking for any  "words of wisdom" before the upgrade.

I also wanted to start a stub where I could possibly get some help if (or when) :-) I do something stupid...

On the Blog Site, Six things to consider...,  #6 said to ask for help before the process so here I am.

I'm going to try to plan out the upgrade for several days before starting.  Just to let the Mods know,  we have Facebook blocked here so part of the downloads page is not showing up.  I'll try to look at it from home.

I don't see prior versions so I don't guess there is a step up process like upgrade to the latest 4 version then to the latest 5 version then to 6.x.  I've had many programs that required that type of upgrade.

Looking forward to any and all pushes in the right direction...

Thanks!

You might want to start by reading this Wiki page http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Resources/Wiki/Page/Suggested_Upgrade_Path.aspx and come back with any questions.

One tip along the way is:  Release.config is not part of the unzip when new files over write the existing Website folder files.

This happens at 5.6.2 I think.  Don't let it fool you, it's just less work now.  You just back up the web config for each version upgrade.

If the sequence of upgrades is not at the link provided in the other reply, this is what I was given:

1. 4.9 to 4.9.5

2. 4.9.5 to 5.2.3

3. 5.2.3 to 5.4.4

4. 5.4.4 to 5.5.1 (this may be where release.config is no longer used)

5. 5.5.1 to 5.6.2

6. 5.6.2 to most recent version of 6.x

If you're upgrading to 6.x, make sure your skin is updated to work  with the more modern skinning engines.  This is out of my bailiwick a bit so I may be using the wrong words, etc.  However ... a Catalyst skin for the site I upgraded from 4.9.x to 6.x, the login module persists after login for one thing.  That may or may not be a skin issue.  But the other is certain drop down menus are masked by Module Title Bars in 6.x.  I advised our client to get a skin that worked with 6.x.

I started updating the server finally. I ran into a problem. I started by going to the next version recommended from mine. 4.3.7 I upgraded and after a few web.config issues, it ran fine. I started playing with it and noticed the text/html module was only giving me a single box even thought rich text box was selected. I went to the modules page and it showed I was running 03.03.00 . It showed an upgrade to 04.08.01 . I downloaded that file and installed the module. Now I can't even get to the main page. I get:

--------------------------------
Compilation Error
Description: An error occurred during the compilation of a resource required to service this request. Please review the following specific error details and modify your source code appropriately.

Can I manually go back to the previous version? Since I can't get to the website, I'm not sure even how to upgrade further from here.

Even if I have an app_offline file, I still get the error.

Thanks...

you need to remove dotnetnuke.modules.html.dll from /bin folder.
