Thanks everyone.

It turns out that I can use the software without having to install it on my computer. My hosting company has it on their servers. I wasn't able to use it before because I didn't understand which password I needed to use to log in as an administrator. I have discovered (somewhat obliquely with the help of your 20 Jun 06 12:25 PM post,  wedwardbeck ), that the password they needed is the one for the FTP client, and not  the password for my main account.

So I will not need to install, and I now leave the install part of the forum to those who have taken their courses in computer basics.

congrats - I'd suggest you might want to dive in deeper once you've gotten the main site up and running.  Put it on your home PC (WinXP Pro hopefully) using VWDE/SQLExpress and have yourself a good development box where you can play and break it there rather than your real site. 

Then you'll be beyond the "basics"!
